Marbled White photobombing a picture of ‘tickle grass’ and other Poacea in High Weald grassland or perhaps a reminder that the #BigButterflyCount is underway… (This is the first year I have seen this locally.) Sussex Butterfly Conservation

My first Silver-washed Fritillary (Argynnis paphia) of the year here in the High Weald. A favoured spot: a sheltered sunny bramble patch on the woodland edge. This one, a male, appeared late morning, imbibed nectar then suddenly gone, presumably back to the canopy. Sussex Butterfly Conservation

Aphantopus hyperantus, the Ringlet, my first sighting of this year of such a common butterfly, especially here in the High Weald, but easily overlooked perhaps amongst the Meadow Browns on a woodland edge. Sussex Butterfly Conservation

A Large Yellow Underwing (Noctua pronuba) - the second one I have accidentally disturbed recently (their FS is from early summer to end of Autumn so plenty of time to do so). Wonderfully striking wing colour in daylight flight. Sussex Butterfly Conservation

#BigButterflyCount on Friday had 5 species incl. the first ever Marbled White on ‘my patch’ but for the day before and after just 2 species: Meadow and Hedge Brown (or Gatekeeper if you prefer) the later providing cheerful bounces of orange along a field edge. Sussex Butterfly Conservation

Wonderful to share the Haven, chats & cake with our visitors today. People came from near & far - from Hollingbury to Portslade & Bristol! The Haven felt the love & produced our 1st two Small Blues of the year, with Green Veined White, Ringlet Skippers, Gatekeepers & more.

Dull and drizzly here in the High Weald presently so a good excuse for the sunshine of a Silver-washed Fritillary (Argynnis paphia) from my local walk late last week. I don’t see these often though there are Oaks for eggs and Common Dog-violet for larvae. Sussex Butterfly Conservation

Have you seen the marvellous Marbled White in this year's #BigButterflyCount? 🦋 This unmistakable butterfly can be seen flying in areas of unimproved grassland. Look out for adults roosting halfway down tall grass stems!

Today's UKBMS Live Data transect - a smorgasbord of butterflies including Small Blues (hooray), Common & Holly Blues, Comma, tired looking summer Skippers, Gatekeepers, a Green Veined White and a very battered White Letter Hairstreak. Thanks to Haven friends Gary Fuller & Cathy.
