Good morning! We have our Trans Awareness Week Q&A tonight, in C582 from 5pm to 7pm. This is a great opportunity to learn more about transgender issues, and increase your knowledge and awareness of the trans community.

Don't make passing remarks about people's gender. Keep your curiosity to yourself did example, 'are they male or female' is not appropriate and can make people feel really uncomfortable and embarrassed.

Listen. The best way to be an ally is to listen to trans people. Educate yourself by reading articles written by trans people, listen to podcasts, watch YouTube videos. Supporting the community and listening to trans people's voices is a great way to be an ally.

Don't claim you don't see gender whilst you might think it's a great statement and that you support people regardless of gender. It's important to see gender so we can recognise gender inequality and fight for a better acceptance and rights for the trans community

Challenge people around you when they make transphobic jokes or comments. Being a good ally means challenging people when they make offensive comments or jokes whether these are your friends, people you know or people in positions of power.

Often comments come from within the LGB community as well as outside and it's important that we have these conversations within queer spaces as well. The best way to fight hate is to start by challenging transphobic remarks wherever they come from.
