Mound Bayou in the Mississippi Delta was founded by 3 formerly enslaved African American cousins in 1887. Their vision was to create a self-reliant, autonomous, Black community. The NYT estimated in 1910 that 90% of its 8K residents owned homes & had “snug bank accounts.”
