This could be Gloucestershire's earliest Pearl-bordered Fritillary (need to check historic records, e.g. from the great summer of 1893!). Today. The previous modern record was 18/4/2007. Butterflies have thrived in the sunniest March and April on record. Record counts of Peacock, Speckled Wood and Brimstone, like summer, with odd sites getting over 100; remarkable! Yorkshire has a record breaking 22 species on the wing and emergence is 13 days earlier in 20 yrs.

The 'June-dip' was at the end of May this year (red line) on Dutch Butterfly Monitoring transects. Graph shows mean number per count per week per 1000m transect. Meadow Brown (M jurtina, bruin zandoogje) emerging and the Pieris-whites are starting their second gen of this year

We're pleased to say that work on our new #LDV 'Volunteer, Community and Nature Recovery Science Hub' is progressing well, with the building really starting to take shape now and more rapid progress expected in the coming weeks.

Fortunate to witness an astonishing spectacle at the beach tonight: tens & tens of thousands of (mainly Small) white butterflies pouring in over the sea, as far as you could see, to the east & west. Pulses of butterflies swept in-off everywhere, an extraordinary sight. 1/2

Elephant Hawk-moth garden record smashed again, with 75. Never had more than 20 in a night before this month. In Norwich, where totals were 733/119 plus c650 ermines/water veneers #mothing #teammoth #MuchAdoAboutMothing #NorfolkMoths

The warm nights have allowed us to moth trap at Jubilee Pasture between Bugthorpe and Kirby Underdale in East Yorkshire. The grassland was looking lovely and we managed to trap a nice array of moths, including the ever popular show-stopper - the Poplar hawk-moth.

Today marks the start of the #BigButterflyCount, running until 10th August! The event is easy to get involved in and one way you can help to protect these vital pollinators - especially important after 2024's poorest year on record. Find out more: …erflycount.butterfly-conservation.org πŸ¦‹

On a mud-puddling site hundreds or even thousands of butterflies can gather for minerals (mostly males). During 40 years of butterflying I have see quite a few, but this site in SE France can now be added. Mostly Chalkhill Blue (P coridon).

UKBMS data is crucial for research. A new paper uses 45 yrs of UKBMS data to examine how extreme climate events affect butterfly populations in England. Heatwaves during hibernation or early life stages and heavy rain during later stages have -ve effects. buff.ly/nOU2Zod

Yay! Blue Underwing (AKA Clifden Nonpareil) in my moth trap last night. A former national rarity, now spreading fast. Is the UK nature conservation movement celebrating these success stories enough???
