I’m happy that computing is represented in this year’s Nobel prizes in physics & chemistry, but even happier that trans-disciplinarity is the lens by which phenomenal contributions to scientific research are being evaluated. The intersection of disciplines is where impact lies!

Enjoying online presentation by Rifat Ara Shams on AI & the Question for Diversity & Inclusion, as part of our The Open University: Computing & Communications lunchtime” research seminar series. It’s not quite lunchtime in Melbourne (11pm) & I’m listening in from Tokyo (9pm). Irum is hosting in the UK.

I’m now also on bluesky for polite conversation: bsky.app/profile/bashar… And using LinkedIn for professional updates: linkedin.com/in/bashar-nuse… When I’m not running around like a headless chicken, I’ll visit Twitter.

It was remarkable, energetic & inspiring. I was lucky enough to attend Dr Jess Wade liked it here once’s lecture in person, & left determined not only to point early career colleagues to her lecture (online below) but also to reflect on what I can do to recalibrate my own “senior academic” behaviour

It’s been a bit distracting this week having my name bandied about on TV, radio & social media, particularly when referred to as a dictator 😳 It now turns out that my name was also converted to a verb by ALASTAIR CAMPBELL & others in Blair’s circle (being “Bashared”, minute 11)🤷🏽‍♂️

Regardless of intention, negatively singling one nationality out in a Keynote slide at a Top Scientific Conference is deeply disheartening, for all humans in the Biz. But I think this highlights a larger trend that’s worth diving into a bit 1/

It's not too late to consider nominating someone or a team for a Real Academy of Engineering award this year. The deadline is 11 Feb 2025. It's a really pleasure to serve on the awards committee that will select the winners. raeng.org.uk/programmes-and… Royal Academy of Engineering
