The Footballer hoverfly ~Helophilus pendulus~ named for it's stripy jumper. There are several similar species. I was helping a friend survey Swift nest sites last night but the cheers and songs reverberating around the valley kept me up to date with the score ⚽

#RecordOfTheWeek Willow Emerald from North Somerset - 1st recorded from our area last year. Noticeably longer than the Emerald with no blue, and likely to be found on overhanging trees. 📷 Gareth Roberts

Spiny Hook-tip has had a remarkable year in the Bristol area, so far 138 have been reported from 15 locations. It's probably not unreasoanble now to describe it as frequent in areas with lots of holm oak in Bristol, through Clevedon and Weston-super-Mare.

It's a bit battered and trodden on, but this is a promise of next summer ☀️Bee Orchid rosettes are identifiable all winter, and they turn up in all sorts of places, so keep an eye out!

BRERC staff and volunteers enjoyed their Christmas 'walk' last week (there's a lot of stopping 👀). We hope all our recorders have a Merry Christmas and feel energized by the break to record even more in 2025!
