First sweet violet of the year for me this week, the only flower open amongst a gathering of sweet violet leaves.#WildflowerHour

The highlight of our #NewYearPlantHunt this year was this rather stunning Small Scabious, Scabiosa columbaria at Humphrey Head, #Çumbria. We managed 8 species in total here. #Wildflowerhour with Lindsay Maskell

Rather windswept and bedraggled but still flowering. I liked the way the pink flower has a fine thread wrapped around it as though anchoring itself to the wall. Mexican fleabane, seen yesterday. 🩷🤍 #WildflowerHour

Lovely encounter with an Irish Hare today, first good view for ages! It ran out of a patch of rushes, but stopped a short distance away. We sat and watched each other for a few minutes, until the hare made its way back to its hiding place again

There aren't many opportunities to learn how to ID plants in winter - but here's your chance if you're within reach of Co Down, NI, with these two workshops. For more details of these and other NI events, visit bsbi.org/botanical-skil… BSBI: Botanical Society of Britain & Ireland Ulster Wildlife The Conservation Volunteers (TCV)

It's hard to find plants that are completely new to Rathlin these days (let alone in January), so a big surprise to discover Hay-scented Buckler-fern hiding in the conifer plantation at the weekend! The crinkly texture was distinctive but couldn't detect the eponymous scent

It's always a delight to see my favourite monoecious plant (Hazel, Corylus avellana) coming into flower. Here are the male and female flowers side by side. A sure sign spring is on its way! #wildflowerhour BSBI Ireland

Finding great variety in size and shape among the larch cones on Rathlin - some squat with flared scales, others narrower with flatter scales. Presumably most or all of these trees are hybrids, showing the spectrum of variation between the parent species

Conifer cones of Rathlin - Noble Fir, larch, Lodgepole Pine and Sitka Spruce shown here. A keen conifer collector may also find Western Hemlock in the plantation, the odd other cypress and pine species in gardens, and the native Juniper hugging the cliffs

Delicate cherry-plum (Prunus cerasifera) blossom in nearly-spring sunshine: an early-flowering Prunus, distinguished by its green flowering twigs and turned-back sepals. And in autumn, round red edible fruits: Plums or cherries? BSBI: Botanical Society of Britain & Ireland wildflowerhour #wildflowerhour

New flowers of colt's-foot (Tussilago farfara), which appear early, before the leaves, to be pollinated by flies & early-flying bees. A cure for coughs too! Lovely to see Lesser Black-backed Gulls at both ends of the island today - welcome back! They always start to appear in February so we've been eagerly watching out for them
