Chilly spring morning at Sevenhampton but spring is progressing as warbler numbers are picking up with 13 Blackcap's & 2 Chiffchaff's ringed. One of the Blackcap's had bright yellow pollen around the bill #birdringing #Migration

First night of the summer targeting Yellow Wagtails. We saw at least 50 dotted around the landscape. We did very well and ringed 5 of them at two dewponds. I lobbied for these dewponds to be created so it is great to see them being used.

Fairly subdued morning of Salisbury Plain with barely 40 birds processed. Should be double that at this time of year. We still managed 2 more Grasshopper, a Sedge, 5 Garden & 2 Willow Warbler's. Site scarcity with a Cuckoo calling constantly & avoiding all the nets #birdringing

Salisbury Plain CES today. Another really poor catch of just 50 birds. Did manage some quality with a Lesser Whitethroat, a breeding female Grasshopper Warbler & the 1st 3J of the season with a Song Thrush #birdringing

The roller coaster of monitoring Tree Sparrows took a turn and we had a positive weekend. We are up to 111 pairs now. This brood were a real highlight as it is a site that was abandoned 5 years ago. It is great to see them return!

Not everyone's favourite, but it's a view that most of us don't get to see. The inside of a Carrion Crow's nest. When they are young, they have lovely eyes!

These Little Owl chicks are very special. The nest box in which they have been raised has been up for 20 years and has never been used. Then all of a sudden, this year it is in use! They have increased in our area and we now have four pairs, what a treat!

Tree Sparrow first broods are now finished. 386 young fledged from 118 pairs using our nest boxes. This is an average of 3.3 per pair which is about average. We now pray for a good second brood🙏.

Lots of people moan about the state of nature in the UK, and they are right to do so. But there are pockets of excellence. I was at one yesterday. There were 3-400 Linnets including this stunning male that we ringed as a juvenile 3 years ago. Plus 200 Corn Buntings & 40 Skylarks!

On a recent post, folk got confused about which species of Sparrow they have. We had a great session tonight and caught both species. In the pics Tree Sparrows are on the left and House Sparrows on the right. 1st pic are adults, 2nd pic are juveniles. Tree Sparrow is the rare one
