In the 19th century, the Woodyard Brewery filled an extensive area between Long Acre and Shorts Gardens. The brewery had large, handsome brick buildings linked by high-level cast iron bridges, (built 1796 - 1880) and had three wells of its own, bored 522 feet deep into the chalk.
