Once again generalising like this is so damaging! Which age group? Which subject? What kind of learning - facts, or learning how to interpret, respond etc. Has he read Nystrand et alโ€™s research on the positive impact on attainment of more open questions in the liberal arts?

A very important and troubling report. The survey also gives very strong steers about what would make a difference. ยดChoice matters most.โ€™ This is what has been so often missing in recent times, as our work on โ€˜let them looseโ€™ & โ€˜just writeโ€™ has consistently shown.

Please share this excellent report widely. It is vital that we turn around a 15 year decline. It offers some quite clear, simple, actionable pointers as to how it can be done. Tes Guardian Education branwen jeffreys

Interesting report from the National Literacy Trust about student engagement with writing for pleasure. The recommendations are welcome + exactly in line with writing pedagogies EMC has been promoting for decades - inside + outside the classroom literacytrust.org.uk/research-serviโ€ฆ

1/ We used to say to children (when it came to writing) any of the following: what do you want to say? (topic) who would you like to write it for? (audience) what kind of writing? (genre) let's find a way to share it? (brings in editing, presentation, clarification, expansion)

The importance of student agency and choice! These 12 poems were performed in our yearly Poetry By Heart event - all chosen independently by students from a wide range of poetry on offer. There is a real danger in making assumptions about what our students will/wonโ€™t like.

Every school should create the opportunity for a student poet laureate. Itโ€™s a wonderful role that carries such prestige and respect, allowing students to develop a sense of voice for their community and to represent its views on local and global issues and events.
