The lives of three generations of the Afzaal family were taken in an appalling and cowardly terrorist attack two years ago. Today, we remember #OurLondonFamily – Talat, Salman, Madiha, and Yumna – and we stand with Fayez. We must, and we will, keep working to combat Islamophobia.

On June 12, 2023, the Denver Nuggets, in game 5 against the Miami Heat, captured their first NBA Championship. Jamal Murray, like me, was born in #KWawesome. Celebrating Eid al-Adha and marking the end of the Hajj with friends – new and old – this afternoon. To Muslims who are doing the same across the country and around the world: Eid Mubarak!

Today at 3:15pm, our campus community will gather in the Arts Quad in recognition of the shocking attack and trauma we endured yesterday. Remarks will begin at 3:30pm followed by a moment of silence at 3:37pm.

Saddened to hear of the attack that took place yesterday University of Waterloo, but not surprised. Hate exists in our communities and it must be condemned in all forms. Violence should have no place in 🇨🇦. We all have a role to play. Our hearts go out to those injured and all impacted.

While we've come a long way in 🇨🇦, we know that we still have more to do, including combatting racism and discrimination in all its forms. It will take every single one of us to build a better and consciously more inclusive Canada for all. Wishing everyone a happy Canada Day.

Jomi told me that in Grade 10 she wrote a poem, “Just A Young Black Girl”. Fast forward 2 years, now recent high school graduate, Jomi Oyediran, published her poetry book, “Blooming – My Way to Becoming”.   Miss Jomi, congrats on your Book Launch & your scholarship from Howard University.

Cybersecurity and privacy are on the minds of Canadians and I hear it from constituents of #KWawesome. @mastercardca investment in UWaterloo Cybersecurity and Privacy Institute builds on 🇨🇦’s Cyber Security Strategy to detect, deter and disrupt threats to the Canadian cyber landscape.

It was warming to see #Waterloo gather in such large numbers this morning at the #RemembranceDay2023 service as I laid a wreath on behalf of Canada. This support reaffirms, “at the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them.” Lest we forget. #CanadaRemembers
