The fact that we’re so baffled by the poor outcomes of the current education system is almost funny. Almost. First, public schools in America embraced the idea that children are capable of “discovering” or “constructing their own understanding of” what they’re supposed to learn.

“In order to write about life first you must live it.”-Ernest Hemingway Kind of explains the creative drought in quality literature and movies in recent years. Virtual reality doesn’t provide quite the same experience as real life.

The reality is that in order for schools and districts to improve student learning the educators who teach in them need to be knowledgeable about the content and capable of teaching it in the most effective manner. It’s also a reality that the current mode of preparing teachers

Somebody needs to make a bumper sticker that says “My kid is an honor roll student but their school grades for equity so that doesn’t really mean much“.

If this were a movie or Netflix series, it would be riveting entertainment. It’s not. It’s real life and it affects the strength, stability, and future of our country. I’m not entertained.

Our server tonight (23?) was a first year elementary math & science teacher. He said he did the best he could & was at a good school but they expected him to know stuff only a veteran teacher would know. I gave him my card & told him to reach out. We have to support new teachers!

I’m currently reading this beauty but I wish I’d read it prior to raising 3 sons. It would’ve helped me better understand why the desire to always have various swords, shields, & other weaponry at their disposal. Apparently conquest has always been the default mode for boys.

Some (not all) teachers get defensive when people who aren’t in the classroom suggest solutions to the problems in education. However, when provided opportunities or encouraged to make or suggest positive changes as an “insider” they say it’s impossible without facing

Unpopular opinion, but I don’t think it’s wise or healthy to tell children from a very early age that they’re incapable of learning how to control themselves or focus their attention without the help of medication. In fact, I think it’s proven to be incredibly foolish & damaging.

My pilot husband just went on a rant about the importance of being able to do mental math in the cockpit. Autopilot doesn’t always work the way it’s supposed to & the human pilot needs to be able to make the necessary adjustments. Mental math is a 21st century skill!

“Read it again? Ok. Read it again.” Want a mirror on your parenting style? Just watch your child. I love watching this little one role playing as her parents. Nestled onto her little couch, her babydoll under her arm, she reads/sings to her baby. But watch carefully and

We may not have learned this in our education courses, but we really don’t have an excuse for not knowing about it now. I so appreciate Carl Hendrick sharing the research & practical application. And it’s FREE!

Just found this gem my daughter wrote years ago. All my kids were voracious readers who snuck a light under the covers to read after bedtime. It was wonderful! Then they got cell phones. Those devices stole something from them they haven’t gotten back yet. Parents, be warned.
