Limoges. At every opportunity people space is created - tables & chairs on streets, taking space from cars, often quite informally. Social & economic vitality go hand in hand - even at the weaker ones, it’s still demonstrably good for business - all business, not just cafes.

From a space for cars to a place for people in one of my favourite client cities, Groningen Netherlands. Another powerful before-and-after transformation 1960’s vs 2021. In recent years one of the city’s biggest challenges has been where to put all the parked bikes… seriously.

Some of you know that during a tricky couple of years work wise, one thing that has kept me going was my belief in this extraordinary piece of theatre; a musical with a beautifully rich score, that carries a message that other cultures and peoples enrich us, they don’t damage us

When it comes to achieving better cities for people, a BIG challenge is how little space we have for public life, given the space we’ve surrendered to cars. Barcelona’s “superblocks” show what we can fit if we took that space back. Video by Melissa & Chris Bruntlett

Never forget, multimodal streets (aka “complete streets”) are simply more efficient, because they move, hold & serve more people within the same space. Whether you think streets are just for moving people, or are for a LOT more, they’re just better. HT NACTO #citymakingmath

20mph speed limits do reduce collisions, actually saving lives, they’re not going to make a huge difference to journey times if at all, & public support tends to grow after implementation when people realise the benefits & that it doesn’t inconveniencing them like they thought…

Just when you think they can’t be any more disingenuous or regressive. How much lower can the bar be set? Manufacture a series of make believe crises & then claim to be the solution. 7 bins Sunak strikes again. Can someone in Westminster *please* actually have some real ideas?

“Amsterdam is preparing to lower its speed limits to 30km/hr [18mph]. The city will install almost 5k new speed signs, adjust 170 traffic lights, and take other ‘infrastructural measures.’ It is also launching the slogan: ‘We drive 30 for each other.’” nltimes.nl/2023/10/02/ams…

This is great. There’s no substitute for community engagement and bespoke design, but often the challenge is helping people to visualise what’s possible. dutchcyclinglifestyle.com/imagine?step=i…

This is a clip from BBC's Inside The Factory last night. - I knew they couldn't namecheck Hiut too often. - But I knew they would say Cardigan Town a ton of times. - So I got this big vinyl made. OUR TOWN IS MAKING JEANS AGAIN. And let Google do the rest.
