Thinking more abt this...we need to consider more how the gravitational pull of the high-profile philanthropic event or intervention, encouraged both by development offices & by media framings, might distort philanthropic decision-making in ways that constrain impact.

Haverford College in the Philly suburbs, Quaker-rooted, has long been a bastion of progressive thought Beyond irony: the school's biggest donor is now point man for helping a Trump 47 fill the gov't with MAGA loyalists Great story by Jesse Bunch 🎁 share.inquirer.com/eEMg2i

I used "almost manic partisan engagement" to describe what Musk was doing--the "antics" in the title doesn't quite capture it, which I think it novel and worthy of philanthropy's attention--but still, I hope you'll read.

Beyond its role in debates over electoral strategy, "The Groups" critique on the power of prog. advocacy orgs & their funders reps a new chapter in the long history of Americans’ critical engagement w/ philanthropy & its relationship with democracy. histphil.org/2024/12/19/pro…

Benjamin Soskis I think this also lies mostly at the feet of donors — there’s been a decline in truly single issue donors (and who are willing to stomach criticism for the trade offs involved in that) so the pressure to go multi-issue is strong

We know that philanthropy is no substitute for government--in terms of resources, in terms of reach. But in many policy domains, it's likely going to fall on funders to test the boundary of that insufficiency.

Progressives desperately need a better understanding of right-wing attitudes & animus toward nonprofits & philanthropy. It's in that spirit that I reviewed for HistPhil Tyler O'Neil's The Woketopus: The Dark Money Cabal Manipulating the Fed Government. histphil.org/2025/03/10/sos…
