It’s official: Nearly all countries have agreed on a plan that aims to charge companies for using DNA from wild organisms. It’s unlikely to raise more than $1 bil/yr but it signals something key: those who profit off nature should pay to protect it. #COP16 vox.com/down-to-earth/…

Hello. I wrote a story about birdwatching in Colombia. It’s about much more than staring at some (very beautiful) birds. I hope at least a tiny bit of the magic of Colombia and its birders comes through. Inspired & informed by the work of Natalia Ocampo-Peñuela, PhD. vox.com/down-to-earth/…

Sweetest thing I've heard in a while: A sunfish at an aquarium in Japan stopped eating and fell sick after the aquarium closed to visitors for renovations. Staff hung their uniforms and put human cutouts outside the tank — and the fish got better. 🥲 apnews.com/article/japan-…

i wrote about something strange happening within the environmental movement — many of its supporters have careened into the far right vox.com/climate/393538…

Meanwhile, rats are thriving. Despite massive, multi-million dollar campaigns to eradicate rats from cities with poison, rat sightings have *increased* in NYC, DC, Chicago, SF, Toronto and other major cities in recent years. vox.com/down-to-earth/…

NEW: Florida’s reef-building corals are no longer having babies, threatening the future of the largest reef in the continental US. vox.com/down-to-earth/…

FYI: USAID has been one of the world's largest and most important funders of global biodiversity conservation — a chronically underfunded area. It has supported efforts to protect forests, reduce illegal wildlife trafficking, and end violence towards environmental defenders.

I looked at these contracts and I have my own fun fact. This is occurring because agencies (not just USAID) are buying subscriptions to Politico's Pro editorial product, not because Politico is getting grants or other federal funding.

A tiny endangered lizard is set to test the Trump administration's "drill, baby, drill" agenda — and what it means for the nation's most imperiled species. Meet the dunes sagebrush lizard. It lives in the largest oil producing region of the country. vox.com/down-to-earth/…

Scooplet: The Fish and Wildlife Service has issued stop work orders, frozen funding, and ceased communication for all of its international grants, jeopardizing critical conservation overseas. Much of this money is appropriated for Interior, not foreign aid.vox.com/down-to-earth/…

This is a big deal — corals in Florida and throughout much of the Caribbean are not producing babies anymore. Sexual reproduction is failing. That means coral reefs will start failing too. vox.com/down-to-earth/…

One way to assess your emotional state, according to my therapist: Imagine you open a kitchen cabinet and everything — tupperware, mixing bowls, etc. — comes tumbling out. How do you react? Would you scream? Cry? Laugh it off and calmly put things back? Honestly very helpful.
