WASHINGTON, D.C. — The National Press Club is honoring Mississippi Today — a nonprofit, non-partisan newsroom based in Jackson, Mississippi — with its highest honor for press freedom, the John Aubuchon Press Freedom Award.

Local news outlets in the region flooded by Helene are producing indispensable service journalism. Right now the top stories on the Asheville Citizen-Times home page include "where to get gas, groceries, wifi, water" and "how to stay safe during boil water advisory"

One caller asked for help finding her brother. Another needed info about evacuation routes. A third worried if a nearby dam was about to burst. And many callers said "I'm just so proud of my neighbors." Local radio in western North Carolina is a literal lifeline right now 🧵
