Reckless neoconservative fantasies of balkanizing Iran misunderstand Iranian nationalism and risk catastrophic blowback. My latest for Responsible Statecraft responsiblestatecraft.org/iran-war-26725…

Perhaps Germany might have thought that this could be a consequence of war when it defended and supported Israeli attacks on Iran as negotiations were ongoing on its nuclear program.

Seems attacking Iran with missiles and bombs two days before its negotiators were due to meet with U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff for a sixth round of talks on its nuclear program, resulting in almost 1000 deaths, many of them innocent civilians, isn't "scandalous" in the gentleman's

NEW: After #Israel’s 12-day war on #Iran, Tehran has launched a crackdown on alleged local collaborators. Apart from suspected Baluch & Kurdish militants, #Afghan migrants are accused of spying for Israel, with many facing deportation. amwaj.media/en/media-monit… Amwaj.media

Blowing up cars with people in them (and apartment buildings) in what is a residential neighborhood with schools and shops, is not part of a "targeted, preemptive attack" on Iran's nuclear facilities. It is likely a war crime.

We know the strike (in Tajrish) was reported and we saw the photos of the aftermath. My cousin's home had its its water supply cut off because the water main was blown up. We also know that civilians were killed in those strikes because we've seen their funerals. So no, I can't

The Arab-Israeli conflict predated the Islamic revolution (and the PLO was hijacking airplanes). The "current problems" include the issue of Palestinian statehood and self-determination, which predated the Islamic revolution and has yet to be solved.

An "axis" between Iran, Russia, China and North Korea has only ever existed in the minds of some Western officials, think tankers with little understanding of Iran, and pro-Israel groups eager to drag the US into war. No one in Tehran even pitched it. nytimes.com/2025/07/06/us/…

Not true. Yes, "Marg bar" does translate literally to "death to", but Iranians use it to mean "down with" more often than actual death. During the Ahmadinejad presidency when the price of potatoes (a staple) was skyrocketing, Iranians chanted "death to potatoes". Look it up.

NEW: Exceptional piece by Hamidreza Azizi that accurately reflects direction of the debate in Iran. "Nuclear ambiguity" is becoming dominant concept; but despite the logic of a restrained, ambiguity-driven approach, Iran faces significant obstacles. ⬇️ amwaj.media/en/article/dee…

Shortly after President Pezeshkian's interview with Tucker Carlson, Iran's foreign minister (and chief nuclear negotiator) takes to pages of the Financial Times. The signaling is unmistakeable. But is it sufficient to jump-start genuine Iran-uS diplomacy?

NEW: Tucker Carlson's interview with Pezeshkian has certainly ruffled feathers in Washington. In Tehran, reactions are more divided. Some hail the president for articulating Iran's position, others lash out at claimed projection of weakness. amwaj.media/en/media-monit…

UPDATE: Senior Iranian source denies rumours that talks are off, saying that coming round of negotiations with the US is "postponed." Prior to Netanyahu's trip to DC, Iranian and US negotiators were expected to meet in Oslo at this time.

NEW: Having just returned from Tehran, Ali Hashem علي هاشم writes about fresh impressions from the ground in aftermath of Israel's bombings. Senior Iranian official says establishment agrees that truce is unlikely to last and is prelude to a bloodier chapter. amwaj.media/en/article/dee…

Iranian journalist reflects dominant thinking in Tehran: "Israel will not tolerate any powerful and independent army in the region. If Netanyahu can overcome the Iranian stronghold, he will proceed to neutralize the military power of each country in the region one by one."
