#BirdNamesForBirds - because birds don't need eponymous or honorific common names. Bird names should be about birds. After all, it’s more than McCown's Longspur

Why do so many people continue to choose MM as a hill to die on? He was a bad dude who did bad things to First Nations people. He doesn’t deserve to have anything named after him, let alone such a magnificent critter as the Pink Cockatoo. More below👇 #BirdNamesForBirds #WildOz

🐦I wrote a piece about the movement to stop naming animals after people--and to remove existing eponyms. It's a story about righting science's historical wrongs, but also about reconsidering the responsibilities inherent in naming things.

While I'm talking about it, it's always seemed weird that committees of ornithologists get to pick the common English names of birds. I read somewhere that David Sibley supports #BirdNamesForBirds. Well, this is a place where the Great Man theory of history would work. (1/2)

Apropos of nothing, the #progressive idea of eliminating #eponymous names for wild things dates back to at least 1799. #Peale #BN4B #BirdNamesforBirds

One year I promise I will genuinely get my act together and go to Global Birdfair given its pretty local to me... Also if anyone organising is reading, just throwing it out there that you could have Bird Names For Birds and/or Science & Sorcery material to your schedule...

Just do it. I promise you that birders can handle new names (especially descriptive ones) for their birds. All the names are new to beginners. Bird Names For Birds Example (tired): Bewick was a friend of Audubon's (the latter probs owed him money). (wired): Gray-bellied Wren

An excellent thread! I believe I said in an interview somewhere on the subject that when I was a kid I kinda thought eponym names kinda sounded like wizard names, and honestly until I started researching them for BN4B that was still the case...
