Male Golden Whistler. Such a stunning bird 🤩 Note: all birds were safely handled and released under the appropriate licences and permits.

Did you know that birds have three eyelids? You can see the third eyelid (aka nictitating membrane) partway across the eye of this male Satin Bowerbird. The nictitating membrane serves to keep the eye moist and free of debris. #birds #ornithology #birdbanding

Yesterday I went on my first pelagic bird trip in over a decade. Not many birds were seen as the sea conditions were fairly calm (this meant I didn’t get seasick! 😁), but there were quite a few of these Flesh-footed Shearwaters about.

I’ve just completed a fantastic five days on Montague-Barunguba Island volunteering with BirdLife Australia on their Gould’s Petrel tracking project. I highly recommend visiting this special island if you’re ever on the south coast of NSW. #ornithology #birds

Last weekend I caught and banded #shorebirds in #Queensland with the Queensland Wader Study Group. How cute is this Red-necked Stint!? 🥰 Hopefully it will be recaptured in the future so we learn more about its movements and longevity.

Unfortunately, shorebirds are experiencing rapid rates of decline more so in the Hunter than in other areas of Australia. In the spirit of NationalScienceWeek, PhD student Louise Williams explains how her research is contributing to the conservation of these birds.👇 #ScienceWeek
