The problem with education isn’t what we teach—it’s what we ignore just because it isn’t on a standardized test: creativity, leadership, critical thinking, resilience, problem-solving, communication—everything that actually helps students succeed in life.

Finland studied U.S. schools in the 1970s. They loved our focus on play, the whole child, and teacher/ school control. So they built their system on it. We replaced it with tests. They kept the soul of education. We sold ours for standardized testing.

Of all the issues affecting public schools, the need to restore respect and support for educators is paramount. A quality teacher is the most important school-based factor impacting student achievement.

Teachers and administrators aren’t leaving because the job is too hard. They’re leaving because the unrealistic pressures of society keep growing, while support and respect keep fading. It’s not the job that’s unsustainable. It’s the culture we’ve built around it.

Want better outcomes? Start with the one factor no one wants to talk about: Teacher morale. Because the emotional health of the classroom always starts with the adult standing in front of the students sitting in it.

As the recently retired superintendent of Bixby Public Schools, I can attest that eliminating every administrative position in the district would not adequately fund Supt Walters' mandate, which could cost upwards of $5 million annually in Bixby alone.
