Took some ear samples from a 36 entry test plot today. Plan to measure kernel characteristics (ear round, length and mass) and tie together with plot yield. Useful to determine how yields are made by variety.

“This is the first time—I’ve been in Extension 21 years—where the irrigation people, the nutrient management people, the Extension people are all on the same page.” ... Using Sentinel Ag for incremental nitrogen application using ongoing, tech-enabled monitoring: She recalled

I got to present to my wife’ HS Biology classes today about field trial experiments. They are growing beans in cups with different treatments. Great to share this with the next generation of giants on whose shoulders society will stand.

I had the local HS ag class out to the corn/cover solar corridor trial yesterday. They also picked ears to do a yield check of strips vs solid planting . If this was 1925 they would have been out of school working for their dads hand picking ears at around 1 acre per day.

Guy at lunch yesterday said he was offered a combine operator job (16 row cornhead combine) for $17/hr. It’s a $500k+ machine harvesting 3K+ bu/hr ($11k/hr revenue) but you’d let it sit b/c you’re offering line cook-level wages? 🧐

So, your industry has adopted something called a “shape file” as your standard format? Yes, Dave. But 3 files are actually needed to make it work and be usable? Yes, that is correct.

Sat down with my 91 yo father last night and went through a couple of platbooks from the 1970’s. It was great to see his memory light up recalling who owned and operated what and the struggle of farming back then. Highly recommend doing so with the aging farmer in your life.

There’s no reason this couldn’t be used to identify rocks, ditches, and other obstacles in farm fields for autonomous equipment.

Got to see some water treatment lime unloaded yesterday. This will get applied based on scripts I generated from last fall’s soil sampling (avg 5.7 pH). Walking floor trailers are interesting to watch. The driver has a better balance than I would have!

Found this movie on YouTube promoting North Dakota ag in 1977. Features a 36 row JD planter w/custom transport setup. Any back story on who built this monster back then and why? 16:38 mark youtu.be/YEVFxrKrc_A?si…

Got the leaner Gleaner plot combine out today while my tenant was harvesting our home field. I suspect it would take 1-1/2 weeks to harvest this field with the K2, they’ll be done in 1-1/2 days.
