Saddened by death of Len Syme. In 1989, I took his UC Berkeley course & mentioned I'd been asked to lead 1990 Int'l AIDS Conf. He said, "Take good notes; you'll want to write about it." That led to my 1st book, The Fragile Coalition. Len was a true giant. sfchronicle.com/bayarea/articl…

The end of AHRQ is a blow to the safety & quality fields. I also just learned of the demise of AHRQ PSNet, which my UC San Francisco team & I launched ~20 years ago as the go-to federal patient safety resource, before handing it off to our friends UC Davis for the past 6 years. RIP.

With great sadness, I note the death of my friend & colleague Holly Humphrey, CEO of Macy Foundation. Holly's career was a model of integrity, grace, and joy, and her influence on medical training – and thousands of trainees – was profound. Rest in peace. macyfoundation.org/news-and-comme…

My JAMA article on negative implications of a proposed restructuring of FDA: "Exchanging imagined redundancies for the expert-based regulation that the proposed HHS reorganization would dismantle risks fracturing the crucial alignment between pre- and post market regulation"

Agree, Chris, it's long but it's also fascinating and well-researched. They make the argument that Epic is the most successful vertically integrated piece of software ever, and that Judy Faulkner is likely the most successful female entrepreneur ever. Both are probably correct.

Proud of my wife Katie Hafner, who gave commencement speech to SF State computer sci grads today (many first-gen to college). It's a tough time for grads – the job market's tight (economy & AI). Yet the speech, on welcoming and preparing for serendipity, was uplifting & inspiring.

I looked at the evidence that AI is replacing entry-level workers in white collar jobs. Bottom line: the scale/timing of job loss is uncertain, but this is not just hype. Companies are really doing it. nytimes.com/2025/05/30/tec…
