New assessment shows that rising temperatures are tipping the balance of the Arctic’s carbon cycle, threatening to turn this critical carbon sink into a source of emissions. What does this mean for our planet? Read more in our latest article 👉shorturl.at/FauEi

Colleagues! Are you attending European Geosciences Union in Vienna next week? Don't miss the film screening of "Chasing the Arctic Melt", a documentary about the ARTofMELT expedition, on 28 April! You'll also get the chance to meet some of our members, that were part of this expedition.

📢 New paper from Bolin Centre for Climate Research: "The Case for the Anthropocene Epoch Is Stronger Than the Case for the Holocene Epoch" The onset of the #Anthropocene can be clearly seen in geological records due to major human-caused changes. It does qualify as own epoch. agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/20…

📢Ever wondered what was driving persistent #drought over thousands of years in the last 12.000 years (so-called #MegaDroughts or #GigaDroughts) in North America? Hence why the prairies were even wider than they are in the last ~2000 years? We finally managed to figure it out 🙏

For over two decades, climate models simply did not reproduce reconstructed aridity. With a set of new climate models & #MachineLearning based reconstructions, it finally worked: It was too warm! And that is where we are now heading again. Read more here: su.se/bolin-centre-f…

For those who don't like to read: The key thing we found is that warm temperatures are causing the droughts (=evaporation). To our surprise - based on all three models - annual rain amounts are simply unable to compensate the warming driven evaporation - as in the future?! 🤷
