Canadian pilot Alan McLeod was 18 years old when he earned the Victoria Cross on March 27, 1918, in an air battle against the Red Baron's so-called Flying Circus. He died of Spanish flu on Nov. 6 that year, five days before the end of the war. We Will Remember Him.

What's a hero meant to look like? Some wouldn't immediately think Rowland Bourke, an English-born new Canadian who earned the VC in WW I - despite his poor eyesight. “I remember the way his neighbours used to patronize him before the war,” wrote an acquaintance. They were wrong.
