Only on page 4 and I already like this book. I’ve been saying this for years - it is difficult to objectively measure student understanding. I look forward to reading the rest!

n/n I'll end with a quote from Pamela Snow. Make no mistake - we have not been presented with evidence that BTC results in math learning and, quite frankly, adults have no business experimenting on children like this. Sorry for not "minding my manners"

🎙️ Automaticity with math facts is key! It builds a strong foundation for tackling more complex math. In this episode, I walk through research-backed techniques. 🚀 Over 2200 downloads already! Please continue to spread the word! open.spotify.com/episode/4mQsss…

“Productive struggle means giving problems that are within students’ capacity to solve” So what’s the difference between that and direct instruction? The whole point of modeling is to increase the number of problems that are within students’ capacity to solve!

Productive Struggle can be traced to a 2011 dissertation, which can be traced to a report from an ideological math organization (not a study), and yet it’s used in math teaching like it’s revealed truth - and to shut down dissenting opinions

In education, nothing is truly new. Building Thinking Classrooms is repackaged discovery learning. educationrickshaw.com/2025/04/21/bui…

I'll be giving a joint presentation with John Mighton, founder of JUMP Math, on "Word Problems and Algebraic Thinking". And there are plenty of other talks; great lineup of speakers. Anna Stokke Zach Groshell Natalie (Mullen) Brankin

Zach Groshell The multiple strategy approach is one of the biggest problems in elementary math education right now in my opinion. We need to start challenging this more. It’s confusing & time consuming & takes time away from practicing standard methods.

Yes! Please, if you teach mathematics in elementary school and your textbook recommends half a dozen strategies for basic addition, ignore it. Teach math facts to automaticity!

Math is a skill— like music or sports. Yet somehow, it's treated it differently. We’d never accept anti-practice attitudes in other domains, so why do we tolerate it in math? Here's Alex Kontorovich talking about this in my latest podcast episode. Link to full episode below.

Fantastic article about the importance of standard algorithms in math that quotes Barry Garelick. What would Euclid do is my new catch phrase! classicaledreview.substack.com/p/the-retreat-…
