“How do you really know that you want to be a chair of a department?”, asks Dr. Bill Chey of University of Michigan as he begins his talk at today’s ACG leadership symposium. “When you realize you care more about everyone else’s success than continuing to nurture your own.”

What a team! It’s been an honor co-directing this weekend’s ACG Clinical Research Leadership Program where the top emerging research talent in the country convened to learn how to stretch the limits of GI investigation.

In this day and age, academic researchers can’t put all their eggs in the NIH basket and survive. In today’s ACG Clinical Research Leadership Program, Dr. Chris Almario discusses the importance of diversifying a research portfolio.

This slide from Dr. Chris Almario at today’s ACG Clinical Research Program highlights the unpredictability of NIH peer review. Shows example where a reviewer mistakenly claimed a grant lacked an “experienced GI with expertise in IBS” when there were 5 on the grant!

🚹 New paper out! Proud to co-author a study using AI to map the conversation around prostate cancer decision-making. Shared decision-making (SDM) is the gold standard—but what exactly should be shared? Our AI-driven topic map helps answer that. 📄 doi.org/10.1016/j.urol

Much of the focus in AI & cancer care is on prediction—who will progress, who will respond. But prediction alone is potential energy. AI must also guide the handoff—getting the right treatment to the right pt at the right time. That’s impact. It's where our team is focusing now.

I don’t think the term artificial intelligence will age well. There’s nothing artificial about intelligence—it’s just intelligence. Organic or digital, conscious or not. This isn’t just computer science. It’s the science of intelligence itself—and how to use it to improve life.

Today I’m at #AWE2025 where the world‘s experts in spatial computing have converged to envision the future of extended reality across disciplines. I’ll be speaking about medical extended reality this morning to review the latest updates on XR in healthcare.

All sorts of interesting VR experiences here at #AWE2025. This is a virtual bungee jump. As someone with a bit of acrophobia, let’s just say I haven’t tried it yet!

I just tried out the XREAL One Pro augmented reality glasses here at #AWE2025 and they are incredible. It’s the first technology I’ve seen that is truly coming close to full virtual reality but on a simple eyeglass. An amazing experience to see in person.

Ever wonder if we're living inside a giant video game? 🎼My Big TOE by physicist Thomas Campbell explores a unified theory of everything—merging physics, consciousness, and simulation theory. Reality as a digital information system? đŸ€Żâœš So creative, so interesting.

How should doctors use AI? What happens if insurance uses AI to deny claims? How should we consent patients when AI is used? How do we train med students in AI? Those are just a few of the ?'s I discuss this new ACG "Brains and Guts" podcast: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/cre

📈 During the COVID-19 pandemic, rates of #IBS jumped nearly 2x. Our new Cedars-Sinai study suggests that disruptions to the gut-brain axis may have contributed to a surge in digestive disorders, even among those who never got COVID. #GutBrainAxis #COVID19 cedars-sinai.org/newsroom/covid

I’m on the Oregon coast right now, and every crevice is teeming with life. Even bare rock is a battleground and a nursery—barnacles on mussels, mussels on barnacles, sea stars wrapped around them all. Life doesn’t just find a way—it layers into every niche. 🌊🟣đŸŠȘ🌟 #Tidepools
