Big fan of Derek Thompson. But as an MD who studied economics, this episode misses the mark. Biggest issues driving costs: 1) American lifestyle is not healthy (diet, exercise, stress) 2) Too many middle men who want profits 3) Patient/doc/hosp desire to overtest (risk aversion and $)

Investigators and departments will shift from NIH to Industry funded research. NIH was already funding less than actual costs. This will lead to less research about efficiency and quality of care, repurposing old drugs, etc. Greater focus on new drugs that will cost $$$
