Right now in #Maine, there are 30 individuals in the hospital with #COVID19. 9 are in the ICU and 3 are on ventilators. As we go into the #IndependenceDay weekend, I ask everyone to keep these individuals in mind. They may not be able to see their family at all this weekend.

Here’s a Friday to make you smile - the cardiac surgeon I’m working with called my mother to tell her that I did my first open heart surgery today (she cried) AND my critically ill patient improved rapidly! It’s going to be a great weekend.

An educational resource I made for respecting ethnic names. I thought I’d create a shareable resource so that it can help people and empower.

Unfortunately not shocking but still important to have the data backing up what we all knew. So #SurgTwitter, what are we going to do next to fix this?

While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last—because every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities.

Matched ✅ and so grateful to be a surgeon one day. Thinking of all the great applicants who didn’t match, reach out if you need a pep talk!

Today, on the day of my med school celebration, I lost my grandfather. The last time I saw him, he held both of my hands in his and said “these are surgeon’s hands.” It was a time when I was struggling to see a surgeon in the mirror and it meant everything to me. Rest In Peace.

It takes a monster to kill children. But to watch monsters kill children again and again and do nothing isn’t just insanity—it’s inhumanity.

I never thought I would change my name when I got married— I was the first (medical) Dr. Newton in my family and I’m very proud of that. But, when presented with the opportunity to say “Hi, I’m Dr. Sleeper and I’ll be your anesthesiologist,” I just couldn’t pass it up!
