Second staff/student social of the year for our #Geography, #Ecology & #Environment courses! Yesterday evening we were down at the beautiful Royal Pavilion at the heart of Brighton - which becomes an incredible outdoor ice skating rink every winter ❄⛸

Day 2 of our outdoor first aid course, where we have to deal with “real life” scenarios including cardiac arrest, stroke, falling from height, hypothermia, diabetes, seizures, burns … and the absolute corker - the severed hand (all acting) 🫣 University of Brighton Uni of Brighton - Geography & Environment

First day of our Geography / Environment field trip to Sicily! 💛♥️ Thanks to expert vulcanologist Boris Behncke for showing us around. Got to hear about Etna's distinct geological profile, and why volcanoes aren't just hazards but also lifegivers for local environments.

Etna's hardened lava rock is incredibly hard (check out Boris Behncke hammering away at it) and pretty inhospitable to life. But on Etna we can also find black volcanic sand that's very rich in minerals and a superb fertiliser 🌱

Ngl it was WET in Sicily today 🌧️🌧️ Fieldwork = being ready for all weather! Still managed to see hilltop Taormina's famous vistas, & to study how 'tourist gaze' & desire for the picturesque has changed the town 🏞️ Hot Sicilian coffee (+ hot chocolate) saw us through ☕
