Upon Dr. Majeed's passing, I'm again reminded of the brilliance & force of the gen of Black Muslim women who came to Islam thru the political/social contexts of the 60s-70s, AND the disrespect/disregard they endured to carve out spaces of their own. They deserve SO MUCH better.

Dr. Majeed's theorization of Muslim womanism, her work on polygyny in Af Am Muslim communities, is groundbreaking. Not just in religious/Islamic studies, but for American, ethnic, Black, gender studies fields. That we don't engage her work widely in those fields is shameful.

With all our critiques of power, we should keep asking ourselves why we hold up certain trajectories of thought & ignore others. I'll keep saying it--& it's the subject of my next book--but it's incredibly shortsighted to keep ignoring religion/faith as central to liberation.

Thank you to Dr. Majeed for her path-breaking, path-clearing, & path-opening work, & that of other brilliant Black Muslim woman scholars like Drs. Amina McCloud, Amina Wadud, & Gwendolyn Zoharah Simmons. I--we--so deeply appreciate all you have offered & sacrificed.

Dr Debra Majeed was an early supporter AND presenter at the Black Muslim Psychology Conference. We are forever indebted to her for her generosity, intellect, kindness and wisdom. May she be raised to the highest ranks of Jannah. Ameen. 🤲🏾

You learned to prepare, to silence, to juggle, to perform. In this season may you develop the courage for ease, play, love, laughter, and walking light.

My dear friend Dr. Bunmi Basirat Oyewuwo, LMSW and I wrote a piece that took us 5 years to write. When we finally crafted this piece on intersectionality Reviewer 2 gave us this feedback “this is overall a beautiful manuscript that reflects the collaborative effort of both authors. #grateful
