This is probably the most astonishing rainfall data I’ve ever had my hands on. Turis, Valencia, Spain, found itself in the absolute worst of last week’s extreme rain event. The town ended up with a mind-boggling 771.8 mm (30.4 inches) of rainfall over the course of 24 hours.

Spain just can’t catch a break. An anticyclonic Rossby wave-breaking event will facilitate the development of yet another cut-off upper-level low next week. It’s too early for details, but the Levante region (eastern Iberia) should once again prepare for possible flash flooding.

Europe will feel the brutal effects of the climate crisis next week with a monumental blast of Arctic air from Greenland. The resulting snowfall and freezing cold will mark an early test of Europe's fragile energy infrastructure and storage. 🥶

Woah, this new paper in PNAS is so interesting! It finds some regional “hot spots” are experiencing extreme temperatures that are increasing faster than models predict. (World is warming on average but some areas seem prone to repeated/extensive heat). doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2…

New study on Earth's cloud cover (link in next post) makes a concerning finding. In 2023, the cover of low-altitude clouds was smaller than expected, significantly lowering Earth's albedo. The researchers say that this is the reason why 2023 was hotter than expected. There have
