More bad news for academics in #Afghanistan - "lecturers who have won prestigious foreign scholarships...are not allowed to take them up...they risk being fired...They saw education as the foundation of a civilised and modern Afghanistan...Many are now regretting their choice..."

Dramatic and encouraging news from #Syria. For over 10 years we have worked to support exiled Syrian academics through our Programmes cara.ngo/what-we-do/car…. We hope that events will soon allow them to contribute to rebuilding higher education and civil society in that country.

Very pleased to be invited to speak today at LSE on ā€˜LSE's Legacy of Supporting Scholars at Risk’. Our founder in 1933, William Beveridge, was LSE Director then, and LSE are still strong supporters of our work. Sadly, that support is much needed now too, 92 years later…

Having a fascinating day in Berlin with our colleagues of the Humboldt-Stiftung. We are proud to have supported all (so far) 15 rounds of the Philipp Schwartz Initiative, which provides fellowships for at-risk scholars at universities and research institutions in Germany.
