I am attending the 🇪🇺confirmation hearing of Commissioner-designate Glenn Micallef responsible for Intergenerational Fairness, Youth, Culture and Sport by European Parliament. A good start for the youngest Commissioner-designate who emphasised his action for young people and artists.

After 3h10 of hearing (of 3h30), first question on #AI & #copyright asked by JURI chair to Henna Virkkunen, Commissioner-designate for Tech Sovereignty over her future plans. Glad to hear she cares about creators and their fair compensation when their works are used.

Vice President designate for Tech, Henna Virkkunen promise the 🇪🇺European Parliament that she will work for creators to be fairly remunerated. 🗣️"We have to take good care of our creators." 🗣️"Nobody should make business of others work without remuneration." #WeLoveAuthors 🎬

2nd interesting question by CULT Committee Press vice-chair Emma Rafowicz : how to improve EU rules to better protect creators facing #AI? Henna Virkkunen emphasised that there should be no use of works without compensation but was not clear on the need for new legislation.

Dialogue from more than 139,000 movies and TV shows has been used without permission to train generative-AI tools, including by companies such as Apple and Anthropic, a new investigation from Alex Reisner reveals: theatlantic.com/technology/arc…
