Awais Aftab The hubris of mainstream psychiatry is so much worse than anything on ICI’s website- these docs are telling people antidepressants are safe and effective for long term use- despite extremely shakey evidence , and don’t even tell people about pssd or the risk of protracted

I was one of the clinicians who looked over the ICI Inner Compass Initiative content, and I believe it is a valuable resource providing info' not easily accessible elsewhere. The basic problem is that it comes from a drug-centred perspective that establishment psychiatrists can't accept.

Psychiatry must label your struggles as 'symptoms' to be 'treated.' But what if this very framework does more harm than good? What if seeing your crises as symptoms only makes them worse?

We have more psychiatry than ever—more diagnoses, more specialists, more meds. And yet people aren’t getting better. Mental illness is rising, not falling. At some point, we need to admit the obvious: the model doesn’t work

"The people who are saying its "in your brain" are the people who are going to make it less likely that we are going to solve the problems that are making people unhappy, distressed and anxious in the first place." Bang on from Dr Joanna Moncrieff

Dr Samei Huda has left X following a GMC sanction for retweeting threats of sexual violence against a female professional. For many professionals, patients & survivors who've experienced bullying over the years, this will come as a relief despite being no compensation....

The petition is deeply concerning. It entirely ignores Dr Huda’s long-standing pattern of abusive behaviour toward numerous individuals. His account has previously been suspended twice by Twitter due to his harassment & bullying. Consider the impact on those he has harmed....

10 years ago, I tried Lexapro. My sex drive plummeted, so I stopped. If I had grown up on SSRIs, I might’ve thought I just “wasn’t a very sexual person.” Psychiatry is effectively castrating young men without them realizing it.

"When patients...being ‘treated’ by psychiatric services are then informed that the drugs they took [for years] in the hope of recovery, were exactly what robbed them of the chance to lead their best life, their pain & loss becomes unbearable". madintheuk.com/2023/03/patern…

This editorial in the Lancet about Dr Joanna Moncrieff's new book & work (an editorial still baised in favour of the drugs) is illustrative of what a central figure she has become in the history of modern psychiatry. Her work & influence can't be ignored.... thelancet.com/journals/lance…

We published a systematic review on post-acute antidepressant withdrawal. The literature confirms that the syndrome exists, but beyond that the evidence base is very sparse and poor. No reliable or conclusive data on epidemiology and clinical management cambridge.org/core/services/…

It’s not because we treat the mental ill as second class citizens - it’s because the profession refuses to acknowledge the harms of the medications

The longer you take antidepressants the more severe and long-lasting withdrawal effects are and the harder they are to stop. The same way that the longer a heavy object sits on mud the harder it is to get out: as we show in our new paper. Thread. bit.ly/437yBTN (1/n)

I only just noticed that the drug company funded (Pfizer, GSK, Merck) Science Media Centre had put out a critical release about our antidepressant withdrawal paper. A few responses to these criticisms. bit.ly/43MqWcr Thread 1/n

Let's call it out for what it is. The drug company–funded Science Media Centre UK consistently promotes a pro-psychopharmaceutical agenda, often elevating 'expert' voices aligned with industry interests. It really is that straightforward. I just wish more in the media would realise this....

Dr James Davies (PhD) 💭 (@jdaviesphd) 's Twitter Profile Photo

I fear the ideology of 'pluralism' is now being misused in psychiatry to preserve the status quo - e.g. accommodating conflicting theories without questioning dominant power structures or paradigms; effectively neutralising the impact of more radical or transformative approaches.

Dr James Davies (PhD) 💭 (@jdaviesphd) 's Twitter Profile Photo

🧵Awais Aftab’s recent post on “over-diagnosis” doesn’t merely defend the diagnostic status quo; it goes a step further by portraying the DSM as “rather conservative” & suggesting it may fall short precisely because it excludes too much suffering from its ideological grasp....1/5

Sameer is throwing mud again. He calls our review 'poor' but Ghaemi's re-analysis 'elegant,' which shows this has nothing to do with science. Unlike ours, Ghaemi's had no protocol, outdated analysis and inconsistent results. Martin Plöderl Details here journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/02…
