As part of a national center for excellence on disability and equity, CHRT considers National Disability Employment Awareness Month an important opportunity. As October comes to an end, how can we support equity all year?

October was Health Literacy Month, but at CHRT we prioritize health literacy year round. When working on health policy, it's essential to consider the #healthliteracy of the people you serve. Otherwise, interventions can't reach the people who need them.

"Address compounded housing barriers," says Abby Lindsay, policy analyst at CHRT. "Individuals with disabilities experience compounded housing barriers due to limited employment opportunities, inadequate income assistance, and extreme levels of housing inaccessibility."

"Integration can help," says Nancy Baum, CHRT's director of health policy. "With public health under the spotlight in recent years, experts have been on the lookout for ways to better integrate public health with primary care, behavioral health, and other disciplines."

"Through job instability, financial hardship, and more," says Jonathan Tsao, research and evaluation senior project manager at CHRT.

"In evidence-based programs and equitable access," says Holly Teague, policy analyst at CHRT. "We still have a lot more work to do to ensure that resources are available in an equitable fashion such that those who need them most have reliable access.

"Many don't know how to refer patients for support," says Marissa Rurka. In CHRT's physician survey, we gave physicians a platform for sharing their experiences with social needs screenings and referrals, as well as their thoughts on what would help their teams advance the work.

"We need a statewide infrastructure that makes it easier to connect people to the services they need," says Sharon Kim, CHRT's director of health and social equity.
