A large proportion of the public studied are aware of extended range severe weather forecasts and use them in different frequencies. Individuals studied also had some form of risk perceptions to these events several days to a week in advance. #AMS2025

With meteorology increasingly using social sciences, stakeholders must recognize the relationship between vulnerability and weather impacts. Analyzing connections between hurricane impacts and vulnerability exemplifies an opportunity to improve warnings and preparedness. #AMS2025

The new Human Factors simulation from WDTD is the first displaced-real-time simulation of a severe convective event focused on humans in the warning process and how they interact with each other, their partners and the public. #AMS2025

Freezing rain is quite impactful but has a limited database of observations. Local storm reports from the public could improve observations and therefore forecasts. However, there are limitations with local storm reports, such as rounding and lack of time information. #AMS2025

We have developed a novel way of measuring the performance of weather forecasts by evaluating the relative costs of “false alarms” and “missed events” for hazardous weather events, helping us better understand who could benefit from using the forecasts. #AMS2025

A Feb 2024 wildfire outbreak in TX and OK burned over 1 million acres in a two-day period. Through interviews with forecasters, local officials, and TV meteorologists, CIWRO researchers are examining the process behind the 21 Fire Warnings issued during this event. #AMS2025

The Arctic is warming faster than anywhere, leading to change in cloud morphology. A study suggests the warming/moistening Arctic boundary layer is eroding the quasi-permanent boundary layer inversion, leading to more frequent occurrences of high liquid water clouds. #AMS2025

A Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) model provides probabilistic forecast of project cost related to wildfire suppression in view of SPC fire outlook area/risk level. Using a year of test data, preliminary results verify well against observed project costs per SPC outlook. #AMS2025

The NEXRAD radar network is shown to be capable of detecting space debris over the continental U.S. Many debris pieces are sufficiently heavy to pose a significant risk to individuals, infrastructures and aircrafts. #AMS2025

A new iteration of WoFS-Smoke with vertical velocity adjustment provides improved smoke structure forecasts and better predicting of pyro-cumulus development. Performance was demonstrated by three wildfire events in California, New Mexico, and Texas in 2020 and 2024. #AMS2025

While it may feel cool, we are beginning to enter a period (through sunset) with potential for problematic fire starts and spread across southwestern OK and western-north TX. Here are a few recommendations to avoid and stay safe from wildfires. #okwx #texomawx
