So much fun to talk about research on crime and CJ policy on The Gist! Thanks for highlighting Probable Causation and the Criminal Justice Expert Panel (which I co-direct w Anna Harvey).

One problem we tried to solve: even when there is a high degree of scientific consensus, media outlets may elevate voices that lie far outside the scientific mainstream. How can we help non-scientists distinguish between consensus science and fringe science?

A potential solution: expert survey panels that aggregate confidence-weighted scientific opinions on emerging issues, allowing non-scientists to see areas of scientific consensus, division, and uncertainty. E.g. the economics panels from Chicago Booth: kentclarkcenter.org/us-economic-ex…

There is accumulating evidence (including by our colleagues at Yale Program on Climate Change Communication) that better communicating the existence of scientific consensus can shift non-scientists towards believing the science (h/t David G.
