It’s always nicer to see your own work in real print, on real paper. It is also, for some reason, much easier to spot your own mistakes. Pre-publication draft free to read online here: crjfear.wordpress.com/2022/05/29/the…

‘In a revolutionary epoch, sometimes men taste every novelty, sicken of them all, and return to ancient principles so long disused that they seem refreshingly hearty when they are rediscovered.’ —Russell Kirk

“To describe and to defend existing institutions is a much less interesting task than to criticise and attack them. Nothing seems so up-to-date as abuse; nothing so old-fashioned and stale as sober appreciation.” - F. J. C. Hearnshaw (1933)

A titan died today. Alasdair MacIntyre’s writings may not be familiar to everyone, but they reshaped the landscape of moral philosophy and showed us how attending to the thought of the past can help us find our way to a more flourishing future.

I suspect this change at Oxford is the beginning of a broader trend. Students doing their exams without browser-limiting software or active proctoring (which I imagine is prohibitively expensive) is just not viable in the age of ChatGPT.
