Since 1967, the Chicago Sun-Times has had two lead film critics: Roger Ebert and yours truly. There was no pressure in succeeding Roger, because there was zero chance I could match his knowledge, talent and passion. But I AM proud of the effort I put in to honor his legacy.

I have had more than 16,000 bylines in the Sun-Times. More than 10,000 of those pieces were reviews. Proud of what I accomplished there, as an editorial assistant, a news reporter, a columnist and a critic.

I'm taking a buyout at the Sun-Times. After 38 years at the paper, my last day will be Friday. Thanks to everyone — colleagues, competitors, editors ... especially Sun-Times readers — who made it such a great ride. I leave w/ gratitude, great memories & a lot of gas in the tank.

Thirty employees of the Chicago Sun-Times — around one in five on its payroll — have agreed to resign under buyout terms the paper’s nonprofit ownership offered in hopes of stanching persistent financial deficits. chicago.suntimes.com/money/2025/03/…

Guild co-chair Nader Issa said employees have concerns about revenue strategies and were “disturbed” by the “dramatic downsizing.” Co-chair Mitch Armentrout said many “feel like the powers that be don’t have full familiarity with the Sun-Times.” chicago.suntimes.com/money/2025/03/…

After more than 37 years at the Chicago Sun-Times, I have decided to accept a buyout. My last day will be this Friday. It's been a great privilege--but I am moving forward. I have no intention of stopping or even slowing down. Cheers. docs.google.com/document/d/10H…

Special thanks to my longtime Sun-Times colleague Rich Roeper for his excellent, prolific work — and most of all his loyalty to the Sun-Times and huge role in fortifying our brand, which has been a key source of our survival. Big loss for the paper, but kudos on a job well done.

Today is a very tough day. We're saying goodbye to 20+ amazing journalists at the Chicago Sun-Times. Pls support public media. Truth & facts matter. tinyurl.com/mp548rae

A 45-year career in sportswriting in two pictures — from the Chiefs-Colts on Sept. 2, 1979 at Arrowhead Stadium to the Bears-Packers on Jan. 5, 2025 at Lambeau Field. I don't know whether to laugh or cry!

"That’s journalism, especially at the Sun-Times. Never enough time, never enough space, never enough people." The Sun-Times is losing some amazing journalists. They wouldn't want us to stop. chicago.suntimes.com/columnists/202… beautifully written by Neil Steinberg
