Hopefully these are models for both large-scale pb approaches as well as individual: address both root-cause issues like deprivation and proximal issues, and taking behavioral/social science issues seriously too.

1: The US and China are seriously talking past each other. This is not just about Pelosi. The US thinks this is about Chinese coercion. The Chinese think this is about a drift from “one China” to "one China, one Taiwan." That disconnect will lead to a very unstable new baseline.

We have launched a call for abstracts for the next issue of the Horn of Africa Bulletin. We are looking for policy-relevant research focused on climate, environment & peace. Preference for research that is community-led and/or participatory methods. DM me with questions!

1/2: Sorry, the US is just not going to get far trying to reduce countries in this region - or others, especially in the Global South - to proxies in its *own* strategic competition with China. This has been put to a market test repeatedly in recent years and keeps falling short.

How do you build downward accountably into state bureaucracies, where the money comes from the top? An important new paper by Chinmaya kumar (on the economics & policy job market) and M.R. Sharan. A clever evaluation of India's new intra-governmental complaints resolution system
