Seven Sun-Times Guild members have decided to take buyouts in the past six weeks — and we expect more to exit soon. Chicago Public Media told us they needed to slash $3-5 million through buyouts and other cost cuts. Today, we’re concerned management might resort to layoffs.

Today Chicago Public Media is launching a pledge drive asking for donations to protect public media. With more buyouts this week and potential layoffs as soon as next week, we want CPM to do its part by finding non-labor cuts and more creative revenue solutions.

Chicago is a better place when more journalists are working here. We stand in solidarity with Chicago Sun-Times Guild.

This buyout offer represents a moral, business and civic failure by Tribune ownership. We should focus on building readership by investing in strong coverage, not cutting staff to satisfy short-term greed. Shame on Alden Global Capital, always.

This weekend, dozens of Chicago Tribune journalists will be on standby as huge protests promise to arise in our city. At the same time, many of us will be organizing to fight buyouts. Our work is essential to democracy, and it's under attack. I'm grateful for my union today.
