In light of a productive conversation I had with Gabor Maté today, I decided to revise my Psychology Today article. My points about genetics still hold but he pointed out other areas where we are actually in agreement. I'm always learning. psychologytoday.com/us/blog/beauti…

Teachers are trained to spot and correct mistakes. Errors are typically treated as signs of confusion, poor preparation, inattentiveness, or worse. But what if making mistakes — when done deliberately — could be an effective tool for learning? kirschnered.nl/2025/07/15/del…

A reminder that ‘knowing’ is not binary, it's not an on/off thing. We move through stages; hearing, recognising, recalling, mastering, before knowledge becomes truly usable. This example of of children's different phrases of 'knowing' words from Beck, McKeown, and Kucan is so

Brad Busch Greg Ashman I think a point that is often missed is that researchers and teachers have different goals. Researchers typically want to create reliable knowledge, which is why they always say "more research is needed." Teachers need to make decisions about what to do right now.

Fascinating to read this book, written in 1927 which captures a moment when education was beginning to implement standardised testing. In fairness, Kelley was remarkably forward thinking in his insistence on treating test scores are merely informing judgement, not absolute

We really need to focus on helping kids become fluent in math facts. When we see kids getting an A on a report card but they can't add, subtract, or multiply quickly then we need to think about how we are teaching math. Everyone deserves to learn to read AND do math well.

This post speaks to a kind of collective maturity that is also unfortunately lacking in many respects in Australia. In particular it’s time to put “neoliberalism” to bed. It’s not an argument. It’s a rhetorical flourish.

Those Kiwis are ahead of us Aussies again, this time on seeing off open-plan classrooms - not fit for purpose and actually counter-productive. 1news.co.nz/2025/07/16/no-…

"While open-plan designs were originally intended to foster collaboration, they have often created challenges for schools, particularly around noise and managing student behaviour.”

The middle school I attended outside Atlanta, GA in the 90s had circular pods of classrooms for each grade that had been built open style. They later retrofitted walls, creating classrooms of pizza slice shape and orientation 🍕
