French trade minister had a call with EU trade chief Maroš Šefčovič, after Trump today threatened to hit European wines and champagne with tariffs of 200 percent. France set to be mostly hit. Šefčovič will talk with US counterparts Howard Lutnick and Jamieson Greer on Friday.

How are countries around the world reacting to Trump's tariffs? While Canada and the EU have taken a more confrontational approach, including immediate trade retaliation, Mexico has tried to lay low and buy time. Enjoyed comparing notes with Daniel Desrochers and Ari Hawkins

In the end, it’s always about the booze. Europe's trade war with Trump has barely started, but some EU leaders are already dropping their weapons and fleeing the battlefield in a bid to escape Donald Trump’s tariff onslaught against their exporters. politico.eu/article/europe…

🍷🥃France has earned the reputation of being the bad cop of Europe’s trade policy. But what happens when French wine becomes a tariff target? “France’s push for strategic autonomy crumbles under Trump’s booze tariffs” 🇫🇷🇺🇸👇 politico.eu/article/france…

An eye for an eye. That's in essence the playbook the EU should follow in responding to Trump’s tariff war, Belgium’s new EU and Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot told us. Tech would bring "greatest sensitivity and responsiveness" from US. W/Pieter Haeck politico.eu/article/belgia…

24 intense hours in D.C. for substantive talks with Secretary Howard Lutnick, Ambassador Jamieson Greer, NEC Director Hassett. The hard work goes on. The EU's priority is a fair, balanced deal instead of unjustified tariffs. We share the goal of industrial strength on both sides.

I deeply regret the U.S. decision to impose tariffs on EU automotive exports.   Tariffs are taxes – bad for businesses, worse for consumers, in the US and the EU.   The EU will continue to seek negotiated solutions, while safeguarding its economic interests ↓

Good call with President Donald J. Trump. The EU and US share the world’s most consequential and close trade relationship. Europe is ready to advance talks swiftly and decisively. To reach a good deal, we would need the time until July 9.

You’d have to be very German to think that U.S. could be tricked *again* into a zero-tariff agreement that would worsen their trade deficit and designed to exclude much of U.S. offensive interests. politico.eu/article/eus-ze… Camille Gijs
