🚨 New publication: I show that immigration raids are linked to both short-term increases in #absenteeism & long-run declines in student attendance in a CA district. Disconcerting to see how these traumatic events reverberate through a community’s schools. journals.sagepub.com/eprint/PKTZIIP…

Since 2019, we’ve been seeing academic terms like “CRT” and “DEI” co-opted by the current conservative movement. I studied this by fielding survey experiments to show how opposition to teaching kids about race is rooted in misinformation spread through politicizing the term.

What would City of Yes look like in Philly? Expanding TOD overlay to more BSL and RR stations, and increasing footprint from 500 sqft radius; upzoning, and reversing downzonings of major corridors; removal of ADU bans from district overlays; redevelopment/densification of aging

How 'woke' are schools in the US? It's tricky to measure, but new data suggests people on both sides are largely talking past each other. Coverage of our new study in Education Week Gary W. Ritter Cameron Anglum Heidi H Erickson edweek.org/teaching-learn…

Is 'wokeness' a serious problem in schools? In our new study, we find a substantial minority of students often hear critical race theory related claims from their teachers.

The new poll on political/cultural teaching in schools will generate attention. I appreciate a point made by Kevin Mahnken’s coverage that I haven’t seen in social media reactions: the political slant isn’t always leftist. For example: “While 18% said their teachers had spoken

NEW from me today (link below): A new study form Missouri shows that (a) superintendents like the 4-day school week because they believe it helps retain/recruit teachers; and (b) the four-day week does not, in fact, do that

New research from Brookings shows a perception gap: While most U.S. high school students view their schools as politically balanced, many adults—especially Republicans—see a liberal bias. That disconnect may be driving education policy more than reality. brookings.edu/articles/perce…
