Eighty-one years ago on June 6, 1944, Canadian forces stormed Juno Beach in Normandy, beginning the liberation of Western Europe and eventually leading to the end of the Second World War in Europe. 1/4

Canadian troops from the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division and the 2nd Canadian Armoured Brigade landed on Juno Beach. The Royal Canadian Navy contributed 110 ships with 10,000 sailors, and 15 fighter and fighter-bomber squadrons from the RCAF helped control the skies. 2/4

The 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion landed just east of the beaches, playing a vital role in the assault. Today, we pay tribute to these brave Canadians. Very few of them are still with us today, but their impact endures. 3/4
