Danny Kassi lives in Old Crow, Yukon. Located on the Porcupine River, Old Crow is one of the Northernmost Indigenous communities in North America. Like most of the town’s residents, Danny is Gwich’in and is a member of the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation.

Mi’kmaw tradition holds that the constellation Ursa Major is a bear being hunted. In autumn, when this group of stars is low in the Northern sky, hunters have caught up with the bear and its blood colours the season’s leaves.

Be’sha Blondin is a Dene Elder from the Sahtu Region of the Northwest Territories. She has practiced Indigenous traditional healing for 40 years. Starting young, Be’sha first gained such knowledge and skill from her family and community Elders.

Cassiopeia is a circumpolar constellation that is visible all year long in the Northern hemisphere. Northern Cree tradition holds that the constellation is the starlight that appears through the stake holes in the dried hide of a great elk.

Members of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation perform a drum dance song at the entrance hall of the Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly. Drum dance songs are one of four kinds of traditional Dene music.

Lawrence Rogers is a member of the Gwich’in People. He is a commercial boat driver on the Mackenzie River. The Mackenzie River is the largest river flowing into the Arctic from North America.

Merek Johnson and Linly Day visit Reindeer Station, Northwest Territories. The small community was the centre of a federal program designed to train locals to become reindeer herders. Reindeer Station is now the primary location for cultural and wellness camps for Inuvialuit.

Unintended consequences can be good. Climate researchers conclude that the Montreal Protocol has delayed the Arctic’s first ice-free summer by up to 15 years. The 1989 treaty phased out the use of chlorofluorocarbons, a type of greenhouse gas that contributes to ozone depletion.
