Tips for transporting agitated peds: move slow, trusted caregiver present, pt sitting up on cot, headphones to cancel noise, old lead apron (weighted blanket), hard restraints, oral then parenteral sedatives. Re-dose or up current meds if possible. #MD_EMSC_Research_Forum

A recent study indicates that low prehospital capnography is associated with the need for in-hospital transfusion. Other than our existing alerts (trauma, STEMI, sepsis, stroke), trying to think of other prehospital findings that could predict, be linked to or drive hospital care

I understand the controversy around vaccines, the uncertainty and the existence of individual preferences, but the vaccine is more than for yourself, it's for others - for your family, your friends, your colleagues, and your community. If able, pls get vaccinated. #EMSVax

Appreciative of emresidents for publishing "A Letter from a Paramedic to an EM Doc" and for my colleagues who contributed many real-world insights into the development of the piece. emra.org/emresident/art…

Great discussion by Kelly Grayson at CAPE on AA's pilot ET3 model benefits: Increased recoupment for billable refusals, decreased time on task, higher paramedic salaries. Challenges: Public expectations for transport vs. telehealth, staff buy-in, maintaining quality standards

Very appreciative of AAEM for hosting HPEM21. It was an indelible experience meeting members of the Illinois congressional delegation as well as some amazing fellow advocates.

A Thousand Naked Strangers by Kevin Hazzard - Definitely one to add to your EMS reading list. Not overblown or self-aggrandizing. Just describing the journey from scared novice to tourist to true believer to proficient practitioner to burned out.

Trying to collect memorable quotes during my EM rotations. A classic came up recently from Dr. Spiegel: "The WBC count is the last bastion of the intellectually destitute" (Amal Mattu). Meaning WBC doesn't equate to the presence or absence of infection so don't reflex order a CBC

"The dose makes the poison" (Paracelsus) in the context of one pill can kill. Common killers (antidotes): CCB (glucagon & insulin), TCA (bicarb), clonidine (narcan), chloroquine (diazepam), and sulfonylureas (octreotide).

“Don’t let the sun set on an untapped belly.” In suspected SBP, Diagnostic paracentesis performed <12 h from hospitalization in patients with cirrhosis and ascites may improve short-term survival.

Really excited about this newly reduced price opportunity for EMS interest students to get involved in this incredible national organization.

Love this study because it confirms my bias on how great EtCO2 (available on every ALS ambulance) is in identifying sick patients (TLDR: triaged 2-4 w/<28 at presentation had a 3.7 LR for in-hospital mortality) pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36802204/

In the favorite quote series: Amanda Ventura said it well on Heavy Lies the Helmet podcast: in terms of positioning, “the pelvic binder should be a mini skirt and not a cummerbund.”

In referring to the management of primary vs. secondary AFib, Max Hockstein said it best, "diltiazem makes for a terrible antibiotic." Definitely not in the pocket of Big Dilt
