7 July 1977 The Rah Band - actually Richard Anthony Hewson, the sole member of the band who played all the instruments - was on Top of the Pops with 'The Crunch'. It got to number 6 in the UK charts. A classic TOTP fake performance - do you remember it? youtu.be/C7_PqlMcP_o?si…

For #mosaicmonday, a superb floor mosaic showing a four-horse chariot race from a house in Thessaloniki, Greece. Imagine having this in the middle of your dining-room floor! An inscription tells us that this team won at the Pythian Games, Delphi, dedicated to Apollo. 3rdC AD.

Detail of the frieze from the Siphnian Treasury at Delphi, c. 525 BC. It shows a battle between the Olympian gods and the Giants. The helmeted head turned towards the viewer manages to convey the horror of being attacked by the lion, even though the face itself is obscured.

It’s #mosaicmonday again. Here’s part of a #mosaic from the threshold of a dining room in Thessaloniki. It probably depicts the Hours. The depiction of personifications relating to time was a symbol of the prosperity of home owners. 3rdC AD

The monogram of Emperor Anastasius I (r. 491 - 518) on a reused Roman brick in Durrës. Anastasius was born here, and was most probably responsible for the city walls I pass through nearly every day. PS. If you know the exact location of this brick I will buy you a drink.

Statue of Alexander III of Macedon (the Great) in Thessaloniki. He faces east, signifying his huge conquests which reached as far as India. The spears are a representation of the famous long Macedonian sarissa, one of the keys to the army’s successes.
