With binoculars this time, HMCS St. John's (340) just came into Halifax Harbour, made a quick turn at the grain terminal and went back out again. Maybe that's what was glimpsed earlier!

Steel-cutting ceremony was held for the 5th Type 26 - HMS Sheffield - for the Royal Navy. Plan is to construct 8 of the ships, with roles such as anti-submarine warfare, air defence and general purpose operations.

Friday the 13th may be unlucky for some, but it's a good day for the future HMCS Protecteur, the first Joint Support Ship. Seaspan will be holding a naming ceremony and celebration for the upcoming launch of the ship.

NATO is discussing increasing the defence spending commitment target for member states to 5%. Hmm. Canada is already in trouble for not meeting the old target of 2%. If Canada is looking to improve relations with European allies, some work will need to be done.

Manitoba Premier has suggested establishing a 2nd port on Hudson's Bay to export energy products. Interestingly CNR published an article in Vol. 15, No. 1, "Third Base: The Case for CFB Churchill," which argues that the Port of Churchill could be more important in future plans.

Did you know that Exercise Cutlass Fury 2025 is taking place off the coast of NS? Joining Canada will be forces from the US, the UK and Denmark. Focus on anti-sub warfare and air-maritime integration. Should be able to see some of the ships in Halifax this week.

There's always talk about increasing/finetuning recruitment to the CAF. That's great - the recruitment process could certainly use some tweaks. But retention is a big problem that needs to be solved. Not much good getting new people in if old people are leaving in equal numbers.

Think naval power doesn't matter any more? Maybe think again. Interesting article a few days ago in World Politics Review called "Naval Power is Only Getting More Important in World Politics." msn.com/en-us/politics…

HMCS William Hall returned to Halifax recently after a deployment on Op Caribbe, Cdn contribution to US-led counter-narcotics operations. Deployment included patrols/interdictions with USCG Law Enforcement Detachment. Shows strong operational partnership between RCN and USCG.

Apparently the Department of National Defence is considering complementing future F-35 fleet with uncrewed combat aircraft. The uncrewed aircraft could be used with the F-35s or without [in extremely risky missions]. See msn.com/en-ca/news/can…
