I visited UNDOF in Quneitra, underscoring the importance of close United Nations cooperation in supporting stability and humanitarian efforts. Stronger coordination across UN actors remains vital to address the needs of communities in sensitive areas.

Visited Al-Hol w/ the UNHCR Rep & our NES team. The situation is dire—funding cuts have made an already fragile context even more dangerous. The UN stands ready to support safe, dignified returns. All states must step up & take responsibility for repatriating their nationals.

Shelter is one of the priority needs mentioned to us by returnees.   After years of displacement, families often return to their hometowns only to find their homes damaged and looted.   While the needs are immense, humanitarian actors such as UNHCR Syria can make a difference

UNHCR has been advocating for sanctions relief for Syria since the fall of the Assad regime. This announcement by President Trump can also have a major positive effect on supporting the large scale, sustainable voluntary return for millions of Syrian refugees and IDPs who have

500,000 Syrian refugees have now returned home.   I referred to this landmark moment in an interview with the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).   Since the fall of the Assad regime, we have a historic opportunity to fulfill the hope of millions of refugees and internally displaced

“Even in their eyes, you see hope.” Our colleague Lujain meets Syrians returning after 14 years of exile. Damaged homes, limited resources and a shortage of funding challenge recovery—but the will to rebuild is strong. Support is critical now.

Very pleased to see the outcomes of the first IMF visit to Syria since 2019 to assess the economic and financial conditions in Syria and discuss with the authorities the support needed for the recovery of the Syrian economy. UNHCR Syria has held regular dialogue with the IMF

I am in Lebanon, heading to Syria for #WorldRefugeeDay. Over two million Syrian refugees and displaced have returned home since December—a sign of hope amid rising regional tensions. This proves that we need political solutions—not another wave of instability and displacement.

An awful attack has been carried out at a Damascus church, with many killed and injured. On behalf of UNHCR staff in Syria — where I’m visiting —condolences to the families of the victims; wishes of prompt recovery to the injured; and sincere solidarity with all Syrian people.

Sincere thanks to Foreign Minister Al-Shaibani and to the Governors of Dera’a, Aleppo and Idlib for receiving me during my visit to Syria. I reaffirmed that United Nations organisations, including UNHCR, will support them as they lead the country towards a more peaceful, prosperous future.

I wrapped up my visit to Syria. I found many challenges but also a fragile hope. To sustain it, we urgently need: Emergency aid to support people returning to destroyed homes and lives. Long-term investments to help rebuild a country emerging from a long war. Both are vital.
